1. "Esa-Pekka Salonen, a most forward-looking maestro" read the headline on
San Francisco Chronicle's Sunday Edition on March 11th. This article detailed
Salonen and Olli Mustonen's debut in San Francisco Tuesday, Mach 13th.
Salonen, telling the reporter why he has decided to stay with Los Angeles
Philharmonic, is very emphatic: "This is it. I'm not interested in another
job. If I ever leave here, I will become a freelance conductor. This is a
perfect place for me." Chronicle goes on to tell that "the Bay area will get
to know Salonen better in the next few years. Starting in the 2003-2004
season, he and San Francisco Symphony's music director, Michael Tilson Thomas
will switch podiums for one week every year. The gesture will be more than
symbolic. It will reaffirm what much of the music world has come to accept
during the past decade that, in Salonen and Tilson Thomas, California boasts
two of this country's most forward-looking maestros, musicians for whom the
music of our age more often than not is served as the main course."
Last Tuesday's concert at Davies Hall was attended by scores of local Finns,
perhaps as many as 80 people. Special sale tickets had been purchased for 60
by Cynthia Ross of Sonoma and about 40 beautiful Finnish flags were made by
Tarja Beck for us to wave at the end of the performance. One of the pieces
performed was Sibelius' 7th symphony.
On Thursday, the S.F. Chronicle critic, Joshua Kosman, wrote that "For
encores, Salonen brought out two more orchestral works by Sibelius, with a
nod to the Finnish flags that dotted the auditorium: the sublime
"Mellissand's Death" and "Lemminkainen's Return".
These encores made us Finns in the audience feel that we had been given a
special concert by Esa-Pekka Salonen and Olli Mustonen.

About Pan Sonic
The most famous act to originate from Sähkö Recordings, Panasonic (now called
Pan sonic), first came into being in the summer of 1993 through the meeting
of two creative minds, Mika Vainio and Ilpo Väisänen. Vainio had worked as a
DJ in the 80's and created his own music with Pertti Grönholm, as Corporate
09. Väisänen was originally from Kuopio, Finland and ended up in Turku
because of his studies, where he joined the members of the Hyperdelic Housers
group organising rave parties; Vainio and Tommi Grönlund -- who was to found
the Sähkö label -- among them. Ilpo Väisänen had been responsible for the
official Down By The Laituri 1990 festival poster, and was during that time
also a member of Ultra 3, an artistic group of wide-ranging interests which,
after Mika Vainio joined, was renamed to Sin Ø.

8. TRAINEE EXCHANGE IN SOCIAL WORK AND HEALTH CARE
In Spring 2000 various parties involved in Finnish expatriates' issues
formed a working group called 'Our Seniors Abroad' to tackle the question
of senior care for expatriates.
In November 2000 the need for senior care in the Finnish and Swedish
languages was clearly voiced at the Finnish Expatriate Parliament session
and a seminar on senior expatriates' issues. The Parliament proposed "that
employees and students of various fields be provided with more information
regarding work and trainee opportunities, particularly in expatriate
organisations and nursing institutions". The parliament also proposed "that
educational institutions try to sign traineeships agreements of longer
duration with expatriate care institutions and organisations".
'Our Seniors Abroad' strives to advance the organisation of trainee
exchange in social work and health care fields by facilitating the
development of connections between Finnish expatriate com-munities and
Finnish educational institutions. We also attempt to bring clarity to
questions surrounding necessary work permits and qualifications-related
issues. We now approach you to survey your need for Finnish and Swedish
speaking trainees as well as your readiness to receive trainees.
We kindly ask all Finnish expatriate communities, that have an interest
and/or previous experience in trainee exchange in social work and/or
health care to fill out the attached survey questionnaire as thoroughly as
possible. (Editor's note: The survey is not attached to this mailing.
However,
it can be viewed at and printed from the Expatriate Parliament's site as
indicated below.)
Please return your form:
- by mail to: Finland Society, Mariankatu 8, 00170 Helsinki, Finland
- by fax to: +358-9-68412140
- or by e-mail to: juha.savolainen@suomi-seura.fi.
You can also print out the questionnaire from the Finnish Expatriate
Parliament's website at: www.uparlamentti.org. (http://www.uparlamentti.org.)
We hope to receive your questionnaire form by March 30, 2001, if possible.
Thank you very much for your time! Your input on this important issue is
greatly appreciated.

10. Uutisia Suomesta: Ulkosuomalaisten ja yritysten yhteistyö
Taloussanomat 1.3.2001
ULKOMAANKAUPPA -- Suomen Yrittäjät aloitti uuden palvelun
Yhteysverkosto maailmalla auttaa pienyrityksiä kansainvälistymään
Suomen Yrittäjät on luonut kansainvälisen yhteyshenkilöverkoston, joka
auttaa järjestön yrityksiä vienti- ja tuontiponnisteluissa. Suurin osa
verkoston jäsenistä koostuu Suomi-seuran maailmanlaajuisesta jäsenkunnasta.
- Tämä on meidän tapamme auttaa yrityksiä kansainvälistymään. Palvelu on
tarkoituksenmukaista.
Baltiassa.
kattava yhteysverkosto. Palvelut painottuvat siten jonkin verran kunkin
osaamisalueen mukaan.
Neuvontapalvelut tapahtuvat pääsääntöisesti internetin kautta ja
puhelimitse. Palvelut ovat pienyrityksille ensivaiheessa ilmaisia sil-loin,
kun ne eivät vaadi vastaajalta erityistä selvitystyötä. Maksulliset
toimeksiannot, kuten markkina- ja jakelukanavaselvitykset sovitaan erikseen.
Tiedot palvelusta ja yhteyshenkilöistä yhteystietoineen löytyvät Suomen
Yrittäjien internet-sivulla osoitteessa www.yrittajat.fi. (http://www.yrittajat.fi.)

If you haven't noticed, summer is approaching fast and it's time to get
ready for new soccer season.
We will open the season with the first practices on next Wednesday,
April 4th at 5:30PM. The location is the same as last year: Eagle Park

PS. As you may remember, last year we secured the glorious third place
in the Nordic Cup, which was significant improvement compared to the
previous year's fourth place. And we naturally only can aim higher,
right? I am sure that my list is missing possible player candidates, so
please pass this e-mail forward and also let me know their contact

12. Helsingin Sanomat 15.3.2001: Suomalaista peruskoulua etäkäy ulkomailla jo
satoja lapsia
Date: 3/19/2001 3:14:18 AM Pacific Standard Time
From: juha.savolainen@suomi-seura.fi (Juha Savolainen)
Helsingin Sanomat 15.3.2001:
---------------------------------
Suomalaista peruskoulua etäkäy ulkomailla jo satoja lapsia --
Virtuaalikoulua kokeillaan uutena etäopetuksen keinona
Ulkomailla oppivelvollisuuttaan suorittavien suomalaislasten määrä kasvaa
jatkuvasti. Se näkyy Kansanvalistusseuran ylläpitämän kotiperuskoulun
kasvavina oppilasmäärinä. Vuodesta 1998 lähtien Kansanvalistusseuran
kotiperuskouluun on vuosittain ilmoittautunut yli 300 uutta peruskoululaista..
Kotiperuskoulu on ulkosuomalaisille lapsille tarkoitettu peruskoulun
suorittamismuoto, jossa ulkomailla asuva lapsi saa etäopetusta suomalaisen
opettajan johdolla.
Tämän lisäksi he opiskelevat
Kirjaimet vaihtavat
paikkaa, diftongit eivät luista ja kieli alkaa sekoittua lapsen asuinmaan
kielen kanssa", Simola kertoo.
Uusi virtuaalikoulukokeilu on jo käytössä Belgiassa, Hollannissa ja
Sveitsissä asuvien suomalaislasten kotiperuskouluopetuksessa. Kokeilun on
toistaiseksi olleet noin 1 500 markkaa kuussa.
"Afrikassa on vieläkin useita maita, joissa puhelinkin
on outo ilmestys", Siekkinen sanoo.
